Step Out In Style: How to Find the Right Footwear For You

Marilyn Monroe once stated that diamonds were a girl’s best friends, but in the 21st century, shoes are a very close second. Thanks to Sex in the City, it’s not uncommon to see ladies eying store windows with real desire, gazing longingly at the Jimmy Choos and Manolo Blahniks within. Owning a pair of designer shoes is, for many, the ultimate dream, and wearing heels is considered by many to be a necessity.

Footwear: The Facts

The facts about our footwear are regrettably somewhat less glamorous. In a recent study, it was found that 75% of all Americans experience foot pain at some point in their lives. Though a variety of reasons were cited, it was most common that their shoes caused the damage.

Choosing the Right Footwear: Vital Tips to Help You Avoid Foot Pain

Being fashion forward is important, but it’s equally as important to look after your feet. Here are a few important tips to keep in mind when you hit the street in search of  new shoes.

1. Get measured. Think you know your foot size? You might be surprised. Many women make a purchase based upon the size they think they are, rather than the size they are in reality. When getting sized up, make sure to measure the width. Squeezing feet into narrow shoes is a sure-fire way of developing painful blisters, not to mention exacerbating bunions. Even if your shoes do fit properly, you may still find yourself scrapping your heel to get your feet into them. Buying a shoehorn might seem silly at first, but it could be an inexpensive heel saver (found here).

2. Test your arches. Before you buy any shoes, it’s a good idea to find out whether you have high or low arches; you can test this easily at home. Get a tray and fill it with water. Place your bare foot into it and then step onto a piece of dark paper. Now look at the shape of the imprint; if you can see virtually all of your foot in the shape, then you are probably flat-footed; if, on the other hand, you can only really see the toes, heel and ball of your foot, then you are likely to have high arches. Neither is anything to worry about, but knowing this information can help you to select the right footwear to suit your foot. Here is a quick guide to finding your arch type.

3. Don’t presume that ‘comfort’ shoe means comfortable for you. When buying shoes, don’t fall into the trap of presuming that ‘comfort’ means universally comfortable for all. What might be comfortable for a person with high arches might not be for a person with fallen arches, or flat feet. If in doubt, ask a foot expert.

4. Look for a shoe that offers arch support. You can tell whether the shoe offers arch support or not by running your finger along the inside. If there is cushioning in the centre, or a raised element to the sole, then it has support. However, don’t panic if you fall in love with a pair of shoes that don’t offer this facet. There are many affordable orthotics out there that can be inserted into the shoe independently, ensuring that your foot maintains the correct position whilst walking. If you’re someone who hates putting orthotics in and  out of shoes, consider buying shoes that have built in Orthaheel technology.

Brands like Vionic with Orthaheel technology (found here) offer footwear with permanent insoles that provide great comfort.

For complete peace of mind, a visit to a foot specialist can be really useful in guiding you in the right direction when it comes to buying shoes. A foot specialist can examine your foot thoroughly, using sophisticated techniques such as gait analysis, to identify any issues that you might have and to offer impartial advice.
